Biography and academic profile
Dr. Dayal Kumar Behera is an Associate Professor in the School of Computer Science and Engineering, KIIT Deemed to be University, Bhubaneswar, with more than 20 years of teaching, research, academic administration, and mentoring experience in Computer Science and Engineering. His teaching and research interests span Computational Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, Deep Learning, Transfer Learning, Medical Image Analysis, Time-Series Forecasting, Vehicular Fog/Edge Computing, Computer Vision, Recommendation System, and GIS & Remote Sensing. His current research particularly focuses on intelligent and explainable AI systems, transfer learning for medical image classification, machine-learning and deep-learning-based environmental and remote-sensing applications, and intelligent task offloading and resource management in vehicular fog/edge computing. He possesses strong hands-on programming and computational skills in Python, R, Java, C and MATLAB. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering from KIIT Deemed to be University and M.Tech. from Odisha University of Technology and Research. He obtained a B.E. degree with honours in Information Technology from the National Institute of Science and Technology, Odisha. He has guided three Ph.D. scholars, around 20 M.Tech dissertations, and more than 70 B.Tech projects, in addition to mentoring several innovation-oriented projects. His contributions to sponsored research and innovation include serving as Co-Principal Investigator of a DST, Government of India-funded project worth approximately ₹19 lakhs and leading DST–IEDC innovation initiatives, including projects on a collision-avoidance self-flying drone and a big-data-analytics-based recommender portal. In addition to teaching and research, Dr. Behera is actively involved in academic administration and institutional digital transformation. He is presently serving as Assistant Controller of Examinations (ACOE) and Faculty-in-Charge (FIC), Timetable, in the School of Computer Science and Engineering. He has made major contributions to the development and implementation of KAYA (KIIT Academic YAtra), an institutional academic software platform in which timetable-management and examination-related modules have been successfully implemented, deployed, and are being actively used by a large number of faculty members and students of KIIT. Dr. Behera has authored two books and published around 70 research articles in reputed journals and conference proceedings. He has also contributed to more than 50 intellectual property works, including Indian patents and granted UK patents. His research and academic contributions have been recognized through distinctions including the Best Researcher Award (2023) and the Young Scientist Award (2023). He is associated with several professional and technical societies and is a member of IEEE, ISTE, OITS, IAENG, and InRes. He has actively contributed to the organization of national and international academic conferences and has served as a Session Chair at several conferences. He has completed multiple professional certifications in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and emerging technologies. Dr. Behera has also served as a resource person in several AICTE-sponsored Faculty Development Programmes and regularly delivers invited lectures and technical sessions on Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, analytics, time-series forecasting including ARIMA, data-driven decision-making, and emerging computing technologies.
